Did I like Pune better than Bangalore ?

I was in Pune a week before the Koregaon blast happened in February 2010. There’s one aspect about which I felt I liked Pune better than Bangalore.

If I am in Bangalore, I will have to really use my brains to decide in which language I should speak to which all people when I go out in the city. Sometimes it is a pain. For example, if I see someone local, say an auto driver who has this red, yellow Kannada Rajyotsava flag on his auto, I should decide to speak to him in Kannada, If I go to someone who looks North Indian like the pani puri vendors, construction workers or Marwari shop keepers I should speak to them in Hindi. If someone looks Muslim, I should talk in Urdu. There are quite a few people who only know Tamil or Telugu(Like in Andhra Mess and all), with them I should follow the sign language as I don’t understand those languages. If I happen to confront someone from North Karnataka then I should think if I should switch my accent to 'Enri Heng Adeeri Sir-a' one. If finally someone doesn’t belong to any of these categories then I should speak in the neutral language; that is, English.

But there is no such problem in Pune at all. Wow. You can be relaxed when you go out in the city. Everybody in the city whether he’s a small chaiwala or a car showroom owner or a CEO of a company follows and speaks Hindi. You can blindly go to anybody and communicate in Hindi. It’s so easy and hassle free. I wondered if Raj Thakre’s Marathi Manooos propaganda hasn’t affected these people yet. Anyway I had a blast going out in the city to do some shopping until the fateful blast happened. So sad.

  1. Its not about being patriotic about ones city, but for an outsider just deciding to speak in which language? should not become criteria to comment on which is the better city.

I personally feel, Bangalore is cosmopolitan city with different set of people, unlike other cities, person from any part of the world can at least manage to converse for basic things in Bangalore.

Moreover people in Bangalore are very hospital, honest and friendly which will make any outsider feel comfortable in the city.

All the cities in India have positives and negatives, instead of commenting on which is the better city to live, lets all make our own cities/towns/villages a better place to live.

  2. Wat about people who do not know hindi will do in Pune?
Should they also translate each word by looking into a dictionary/book like how chatur(Silencer) did in 3 idiots.from english to hindi though...ha ha..

Atleast in bangalore people can survive with any language they know.Even the pani puri, chai walas have learnt to speak in english after coming to bangalore.

If you see its an advantage to talk and learn different languages. When you travel to other states they do not speak in any other language other than their state language. So if you know different languages you will be able to communicate the basic things easily rather than speaking in sign language. In Bangalore you will not face this problem because it is a multilingual city.

I Love my city bangalore !! three cheers to bangalore !!!

  3. I think there is some misunderstanding about what I wrote, may be the subject line is misleading. I never said I dislike Bangalore. I only said I like Pune more when it comes to language. As Priya is saying confusingly that knowing multiple languages helps. But I never said one should not know multiple languages. I only said it gives me head ache if I need to decide what langauage to use to which all people. It's only my opinion. But some people may enjoy talking in multiple langauges to multiple people. I dont want to be biased towards bangalore coz I am a kannadiga or Bangalorean. To tell the truth, there are 100s of things in which Bangalore in better than Pune mainly because of its weather, wealth, peace. I don't think any other city has even half of the volovs that BMTC runs. It's a perfect melting pot for all the people. I am proud about it. But when it comes to langauges, I enjoy more in cities like Pune or New York !

  4. Maga Pune is good anta heledre yarooo yenu helthirllilla. Instead you pulled bangalore in comparision with Pune.
Bangalore is land of oppurtunity people from all over the India, small village, town come here and settle. It's Bread winner for thousands of NNB - Non Native of Bangalore people. After all these its fexible for non kannadiga to survive.Minor example BMTC bus boards. Dear you please go to chenaai once and travel maga, then you will know what is there in bangalore. Why people fall in love with the city and decide to dwell here only entire there life anta.
Bangalore is lovely place on earth.

  5. Chai darling,
Your comment is out of topic. Suppose if I say Priyanka Chopra has a worse nose than say Nandita Dass, you're assuming that I said Priyanka has worse eyes, worse ears, worse hair, worse figure and what not. In fact I did not compare Blore with Pune. I compared myself when I am in B'lore and when I'm in Pune separately. Even if I compare, I don't understand why you should take it so personally. Bangalore is as much mine as much as it is yours. Let's learn to appreciate each other's opinions and have a healthy disagreement than being emotional about it

    2. Prateek/Pawan, to each his own. People of Bangalore are known for their hardowrk, humility and politeness. Hope you know from where Dravid and Kumble come from? Whichver city you live in, don't forget we are all Indians. Cheers

    3. Hi Pratik (from Udaipur). I do not know your age but looks like you need to hold the way you use your language for people from any area (be it banglore or Sadashiv Peth from Pune). Hindi is not the National language please check decision given by Gujrat High Court in Jan 2010.
Kannada people expecting a migrant to know Kannada could not be a fair expectation in initial years of migrant's life but yes it is a fair expectation if he/she is living there for years (you decide the number...might be 5 or 7 years ?? What Say). Language issues are all over the world and I would suggest please not get frustrated and learn it as quick as possible. That adds value to you as a person ..!! Next thing I can not resist asking you to check where the people from Sadashiv peth have reached. If you check their achievements you will surprised. These people though very traditional they have reached top positions in their respective subjects be it Science, Arts or Engineering. This is a area of research and do not draw conclusions very fast. It is similar to calling a Marwari "Kanjus" and forgetting about their business acumen. I would say Grow Up and see Indian Society with more wide view than typical lenses of "what suits me is the best"..!! it might happen that you yourself are not well received in many other societies in India...you may think of your own. Remember India is and will be always full of variety & the real taste of India is its variety only...please do not use foul language for that....God Bless you..!!

  19. Hi,
Basically i am from maharashtra so i am much familier with pune environment. But now since last 2 yrs i am working in bangalore. I observed major differences in both cities and i vote for pune.
    Because....
Bangalore has many advantages but more than that disadvantages too.
B'lore is very polluted city due to hectic traffic all the time.. pune also in same bucket but with less traffic...
Food is major issue in bangalore.. everywhere same kind of food outlates and no variety in food.. on the other side pune has its own taste and variety even you can get good south indian food here. Cost of living is much more in b'lore and i feel its totally without any reason.
Mall and infra is good in bangalore.
No much sightseen points in bangalore.. you can not hang out or just go on long drive like in pune.
    Transport is very good though.
People are supportive but i always felt they are not as friendly to outsiders as pune ppl.
Pune is surrounded by many educational institutes so more students get attracted.. bangalore does not have good institutes but still they charge almost double and grab more money (my experience).
From many such aspects, i feel pune is awesome. Bangalore ppl are more keen to do business by snaching money from outsiders.. PGs in bangalore is example of it.. (no good facilities atleast for boys)
Many parks are there in b'lore.. these are joggers parks and crowded too.
B'lore Weather is good and balanced but Unpredictive too.
So my call is for PUNE....!!!

  20. I have stayed 8 years in Pune. Now I moved to Bangalore 6 months back due to work change.
I can say that if you are a human being then you will find Pune ways better than Bangalore. Banaglore is city where you will be unwelcomed and feel pity on your situation.
Starting from landlords, auto wallas, govt officials are there to loot you. If you go out of home you will feel alone unlike Pune. Bangalore is very unfriendly city

  21. I have lived in Pune all my life and visited BLR only once but the experience was not nice. While going to Balaji temple, we took a halt in BLR. The traffic was horrible. Near Chinnaswami stadium, a KRTC driver upon seeing MH12 number plate came from nowhere and collided with our car and went ahead with a smile on his face. There is some anti Marathi thing with BLRians. Although Puneri people are also a bit too proud of themselves, I dont think, this sort of thing will happen in Pune.
